Margaretville sits right along the East Branch of the Delaware River, which is widely regarded as one of the best freshwater fishing spots in the Northeast. Dining & Drinks

A Catskills institution that’s been drawing people off Route 28 for decades. The menu is classic American comfort food done with care — eggs, pancakes, burgers, and daily specials that change with the seasons. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than expected and leaving already thinking about coming back. Expect a wait on weekend mornings, but it moves quickly.

A husband-and-wife operation in the heart of downtown Margaretville, run by a team who came up through the New York City dining scene. The attention to detail shows in everything from the pastries to the coffee to the lunch menu. The croissants are genuinely exceptional. It’s a great first stop before a hike or a relaxed morning when you’re in no hurry to do anything at all.

If you’re looking for a proper dinner out, this is the spot. Located in Phoenicia, the Phoenician Steakhouse dry-ages its meat in house and brings in fresh seafood from New York City twice a week. The space is warm and the food is consistently excellent. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends — it fills up fast, especially in peak season.

Technically located in Phoenicia despite the name, Woodstock Brewing is one of the best places in the area to spend a lazy afternoon. The tap list rotates regularly with creative beers, the indoor space has big windows and a great atmosphere, and the outdoor seating area is perfect on a warm day. The food menu is solid too — the burger in particular has a strong following.

A Balkan-inspired restaurant tucked into downtown Margaretville that surprises a lot of first-time visitors. The menu is built around house-made breads, cured meats, cheese plates, and savory pastries, paired with an impressive wine list. The food feels genuinely homemade in a way that’s increasingly rare. One of those places where you leave already planning a return visit.

For a quick coffee or a light bite before heading out for the day, Fleischmanns itself has a handful of charming spots right on Main Street. Nothing elaborate — just good, local, and convenient when you don’t want to drive anywhere first thing in the morning.

Towns Worth Exploring

The closest proper town to the chalet and an easy one to spend a few hours in. The downtown is compact and walkable, with a good mix of local restaurants, independent shops, and a farmers market on Saturday mornings that draws vendors from across the region. The East Branch Delaware River runs right through town, and there are a few nice spots along the water to sit and take it all in. It’s the kind of small town that feels genuinely lived-in rather than built for tourists.

About 25 minutes from the chalet, Phoenicia has quietly become one of the most popular destinations in the Catskills — and for good reason. The main street is lined with great restaurants, a well-loved brewery, a few interesting shops, and easy access to some of the best hiking in the area. It has the energy of a town that people actually love being in, without feeling overcrowded or overly polished. A full afternoon here goes by very quickly.

About 40 minutes from the chalet, Woodstock is the cultural heartbeat of the Catskills. Galleries, live music, boutique shops, and a lively restaurant scene make it worth the drive for at least one afternoon during your stay. The town has a character all its own — creative, laid-back, and a little eccentric in the best way. Even if you just walk Tinker Street and stop for a meal, it’s a memorable part of any Catskills trip.

A quieter, less-visited village about 20 minutes away that’s worth a slow morning drive. Andes has a handful of interesting shops, a local art gallery, and the kind of unhurried small-town atmosphere that’s increasingly hard to find. It’s not a full day out, but it pairs nicely with a drive through the mountain roads on the way there or back.
